Seattle Parks and Recreation will hold an educational session on coyotes at the Discovery Park Environmental Education Center, 3801 W Government Way, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4th.

The recent presence of coyotes in Discovery Park and in the Magnolia neighborhood have led to some uncertainty about what to do living side by side with native wildlife, and what to do when you encounter it. Volunteers Needed for Magnolia Summerfest

The Magnolia Summerfest is an event of the Magnolia Chamber Of Commerce, organized and managed by members, residents and friends of Magnolia who volunteer as a community to ensure that this event is a success.  As volunteers come and go, there is always a need for replacements to organize and manage parts of Summerfest including the art show; craft, commercial, and non-profit vendors; the parade; recycling; and publicity.

Please volunteer and pass on the word. Contact  Heather Ussery, 425-269-1554 or heather.ussery@gmail.com .

Second Saturday at the Movies

The Queen Anne Movie Guild presents the timely and insightful documentary, “Sick Around the World” on Saturday, March 13, at 7:00pm at the Queen Anne United Methodist Church, 1606  5th Avenue W, the pink building next door to the Queen Anne Branch of the Seattle Public Library. Entrance is on W Garfield St .

With health care reform in our country stalled and the need for a new way forward, it’s instructive to know what health care looks like in other countries around the globe. Washington Post Foreign Correspondent, T. R. Reid, takes us to five capitalist democracies: the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, and Switzerland, to see five remarkably different health care systems, all of which deliver health care for everyone in their countries and to a higher standard than our own.

Refreshments and discussion immediately following movie

City Data Open to the Public

Sixty city of Seattle datasets are now accessible online at http://data.seattle.gov, which is part of Seattle’s municipal web site.  The new site holds significant amounts of information about operations and infrastructure, such as locations of city facilities, schools, and food banks.

Data.seattle.gov is a first step in making data publicly available to meet the city of Seattle’s goals for an open, transparent and accountable government.  The site initially posts datasets from My Neighborhood Map, which is a feature on the city’s website, www.seattle.gov.  It will add data managed by city departments, beginning with data which is commonly requested through the public disclosure process.  Some of this data is already available on department websites, but data.seattle.gov will centralize the information on a single site.

Changes to the Neighborhood Matching Fund

Over its 21 years, the Neighborhood Matching Fund team has made continuous enhancements to the program. As part of a formal assessment last year, several improvements have been made to its structure, process and forms - all to make it easier and simpler to navigate and execute.

The following changes to the Neighborhood Matching Fund (NMF) begin January 2010.

 NMF Guidelines:

· The NMF guidelines are now clearer and easier to navigate.  In fact, all four NMF funding programs are covered under the same guidelines document.

· The value of volunteer time has increased to $20 per hour keeping up with Independent Sector research on average volunteer time value.

Fund Category and Dollar Limit Changes:

· The Outreach Fund is now combined with the Small Sparks Fund, which will continue to provide support for community building projects with small funding needs, along with the enhancement of more flexible guidelines.

· To keep up with rising costs, fund request limits have increased for the Small Sparks Fund up to $1,000 and the Small and Simple Fund up to $20,000 per project.

Application Forms:

· The forms have been redesigned to be easier to use, along with simplified questions, fill-in electronic formatting, and simpler work plan and budget forms.

· Signatures documenting community match pledges are no longer required for the application stage.

Technical Assistance:

· To increase outreach and assistance to projects, the Neighborhood Matching Fund staff will hold one to two technical assistance workshops every month at various locations around the city.  Check our website at www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/nmf for specific dates and times.

· The website has been revamped to ease navigation and provide clearer information with the inclusion of a “Frequently Asked Questions” section.  Watch for the launch of the new webpages on December 1.  The website will continue to expand, allowing community members access to NMF advice and technical assistance – any time, any day.

The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods NMF Team is excited about these improvements and trusts applicants will find them helpful as they, their organization or their neighborhood participate in the Neighborhood Matching Fund.

Seattle Neighborhood Waste Reduction Rewards

Reduce Waste and Win $50,000 Neighborhood Improvement Project!

If  you live in Queen Anne, Magnolia, Capitol Hill, Cascade, Eastlake, Westlake, Montlake, Madison Park, Leschi, Madrona or other central Seattle neighborhoods, team up with your neighbors to reduce waste and win a $50,000 community improvement project selected by the community and installed and maintained by CleanScapes, the City-contracted garbage and recycling service in central Seattle.

Approximately 200 tons of garbage are collected from Seattle single-family households every day.  Much of this garbage could have been recycled, or better yet, not created in the first place.

To promote community-wide waste reduction, CleanScapes is piloting a Neighborhood Waste Reduction Rewards program in central Seattle.

To win, simply reduce the amount of garbage, recycling, and yard waste set out for collection by households in your neighborhood collection area.  The neighborhood with the greatest percentage reduction between Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 wins.  Community councils representing the winning area will choose a community improvement project from a list of options worth $50,000.  The winning area will be selected in early spring 2010, so spread the word and reduce waste now!

Visit www.cleanscapes.com for more information.

Seattle Offers Compost Bins at Huge Discounts

Program Makes Green Living at Home Easier

The City of Seattle is making it easier for Seattleites to garden the natural way by offering huge discounts on compost bins. Seattle residents can save more than one hundred dollars on high-quality compost bins while building healthy soils, and helping their plants to thrive.

Local gardeners can take advantage of two great offers -

- Green Cone Food Composting Bins Two Cones for $40, when purchased together. One Cone for $25 (Retail price over $100 each). Limit two per household.

- Yard Waste Compost Bins $25 each (Retail price over $70). Limit one per household.

The compost bins can be purchased online at www.seattle.gov/binsandbarrels or by calling (206) 684-0190.

The Green Cone food waste composters turn food scraps such as fruits and vegetables, breads and grains, eggshells, coffee grounds, and tea bags into nutrient-rich compost for customers’ gardens.

The yard waste compost bins transform grass clippings, leaves, stalks, dead plants, small twigs, and most weeds into a natural soil builder.

Customers can also purchase high quality rain barrels for $65 plus tax. Rain barrels allow gardeners to collect Seattle’s famed rain for use in their yards. Depending on how much it rains, a rain barrel or two collecting water from a 500 to 600 square-foot roof area can provide enough water to care for the plants and flowerpots on a deck or patio for several weeks.

Home delivery is available for a small delivery charge, or orders can be picked up at the Seattle Conservation Corps office at Sand Point/Magnuson Park, Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sales of compost bins are restricted to City of Seattle residents.

For more information on composting and natural yard care, customers can call or e-mail the Garden Hotline at (206) 633-0224 or info@gardenhotline.org.

Seattle City Light Customers Can Recycle CFL’s at 2 Locations

“Seattle City Light encourages our customers to use energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs and to recycle them when it’s time to dispose of them,” Superintendent Jorge Carrasco said. “Establishing these two recycling locations should provide a convenient service to customers who want to save energy.”

The utility’s collection locations only accept compact fluorescent bulbs, not fluorescent tube lights.

The recycling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at City Light’s South Service Center, 3613 4thAve. S. (4th& Spokane) and the North Service Center, 1300 N. 97th St. (97th & Stone Way).

For other recycling options in the Puget Sound area, visit the Take It Back Network at http://www.takeitbacknetwork.org/

Small Sparks Community Development Grant is Waiting!

Do you have ideas for building community that could use up to $1000 from the City's Small Sparks program? Small Sparks seeks to bring together new people. The goal is to get new people (e.g., recent immigrants, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities) involved in creative small-scale community building initiatives. For example, a Small Sparks project in the Beacon Hill neighborhood was done where people organized a paper airplane toss from a tower. If you have any ideas we would love to hear about them, and share information about the program with you! Email your ideas to Christa Dumpys at christa.dumpys@seattle.gov.
